The hemline was where I chose to begin working the designs into this piece. I worked from bottom to top, because I had not yet come across an acceptable method of plotting the designs in advance on the fabric. So, I started with the hemline and worked designs inspired by the 20s embroidery patterns or my own whim, into the dress until I reached approximately the top of the knee. At that point, I began to work the free-form fringe into the open area between the knees & bust. This was actually to keep the dress from being too heavy for the fabric, which is silk.
